Supermarket Sabotage of Seniors

Supermarket Sabotage of Seniors
The night was cheerful and the city streets were glittering with lanterns. In the park, on a bench surprisingly not at all occupied by pigeons, a peculiar group had gathered - the Amused Pensioners' Club. They were led by Jadwiga, who as a child dreamed of an acrobatic career and to this day never fails to do a bit of gymnastics with her shopping trolley. Next to her, Mr Marian, a master of sudoku and suspiciously fast on his worn-out roller skates, argued that tonight would be the most exciting night in years. There was also Ms Zosia with her Nordic walking poles, which she knew how to use in surprising ways, and Mr Bogdan - a well-known prankster who could even hide a sweet roll in someone else's handbag while talking. All four had a secret plan. For the past week, they had been eyeing the new Night Rarity supermarket, open 24/7, and rumour had it that every Thursday at midnight, a batch of the crispiest doughnuts in town would appear there. However, ever since the rival Young (in spirit) Seniors Association started turning up at the shelves just after delivery, getting those doughnuts has become a challenge.... and a matter of honour! - Time for sabotage! - whispered Mrs Jadwiga, eyes shining. - But a peaceful one, of course! We, dear co-conspirators, must get our doughnuts in front of them. So they began their preparations: Marian oiled the rollers to sneak quietly between the shelves, Zosia sharpened the sticks and Bogdan tested the new, noiseless bun wrappers. They all dressed in waistcoats in shades of navy blue and purple, because apparently these are the colours that show up worst on shop surveillance. As the clock on the town hall tower struck midnight, the group slipped into the supermarket, ready for anything. Suddenly, from behind the pickle rack, they heard a quiet rustling and a distinctive clatter.... Was it their rivals from the Association? Or had someone else decided to hunt for doughnut treasures that night? All would be decided in a moment, when a meeting would take place in the bakery department that no one was ready for....
