Storm over Valdyrfjord

Storm over Valdyrfjord
The Valdyrfjord was quiet, typical of winter mornings. The snow muffled the sounds, and the fjord of ice-covered water seemed like a dormant beast. Leif, son of jarl Torvin, stood on the cliff, looking out at the white plain stretching to the horizon. His shoulders were wrapped in a heavy wolf cloak, and at his belt gleamed a new axe, a gift from his father on his seventeenth birthday. Something unusual had been whispered in the settlement for days. An old trader had come to town and claimed that something was hiding in the deepest cave by the bay, something that had been waiting for the brave for centuries. Leif couldn't stop thinking about it - especially as lately he had been dreaming more and more about ice dragons and mysterious marks drawn with a blade in the ice. That morning, as dawn melted in the sky, Leif met up with his friends - Freya, who was better at wielding a bow than most adult warriors, and Gunnar, the son of a blacksmith, known for his strength and courage. At first it was supposed to be a simple hunting expedition, but they all knew that something was pulling them towards the old, forbidden cave. The village was slowly waking up as the three friends crept through the snowy forest. The wind carried the voices of the sea and the barking of sled dogs. Finally, after hours of walking, they reached a cliff above which, according to legend, was the entrance to a cave. The ice crunched under their boots and a strange metallic smell permeated the air. Leif felt something squeeze him inside. They approached a black crevice emerging from the white rock. For a while no one spoke. Finally Gunnar pulled out his torch and Freya put an arrow on the string. From the darkness came a distant, rhythmic sound, reminiscent of a giant's heartbeat. Leif took the first step into the darkness, feeling his breath freeze in his throat. The shadow of the cave enveloped them like a thick, icy curtain. Inside the tunnel, the walls shone like thousands of tiny crystals. The further they walked, the sound became clearer, and a strange red dust began to appear under their feet. Suddenly, the tunnel widened, revealing a huge grotto in the middle of which, on a snow-covered boulder, someone or something was waiting. The three young Vikings held their breath. Gunnar raised his torch and the red light danced across the walls, revealing the outlines of something that should not exist in this place....
