Did You Know?

Stars at the end of the tunnel

Stars at the end of the tunnel
The Oberon space station drifted on the edge of the solar system like a ghost ship, evaded by commercial ships for decades. But for four high school students completing science internships - Mai, Philip, Emma and Alex - it was the place where routine ended and adventure began. Equipped with torches, intercoms and a huge dose of curiosity, they left the main deck under the cover of artificial twilight and headed deep into the dusty corridors of the engineering section. - 'This is where the engineering team is said to have gone missing during the last mission,' Emma whispered, more to herself than to the rest. The noise of the ventilation, their own breaths, the echo of footsteps - it all built up an atmosphere that further stoked the tension. - 'Check that map again, Filip - Mai held the door leading to the engine section. Filip retrieved an old map of the station from the archives, he had it on his tablet. - There should just be a wall here... - he muttered, but suddenly something caught his eye: a small anomaly on the plan, a barely visible line. Not a minute had passed when Alexa noticed a lever protruding from the wall panels. She pulled it, and a section of the floor trembled and... gave way, revealing a staircase down. They were silent for a moment. - 'Shall we go? - Alex asked uncertainly. Neither of them wanted to retreat. They descended deeper and deeper until the light of the torches reflected on something unexpected: a door with an unfamiliar symbol engraved on the matt steel. It was heavy, almost monumental, and the air around it made it seem as if no one had been here for decades. Emma, unable to contain herself, placed her hand on the symbol. The panel suddenly flashed with blue light. The door opened with a hiss, and to their eyes appeared an interior that no maps had ever covered: a room full of equipment, holograms and... a mysterious oval capsule in the middle, which itself began to emit a quiet, pulsing sound. At that moment, an unfamiliar, distorted voice spoke from the intercom: - "You should not be here." Silence fell, everyone afraid to take another step. What was waiting in the capsule? And who had spoken to them?
