Star Quarantine
Time passed differently in space, but Zosia still felt like an eternity had passed since their school research capsule had stopped responding to the base's signals. She was not alone here. Sitting next to her were Karol and Lena, her colleagues from the advanced astronomy programme. Their assignment was to collect space dust samples from the asteroid belt, but a completely unplanned course took them into orbit around an unknown, purple-green planet.
Through the porthole, they could see a sea of clouds swirling lazily against the blackening cosmos. Not even the most eccentric physics teacher had mentioned the planet resembling a giant glass sphere, surrounded by bright rings. The hope of a quick return to the mother ship was melting away with every passing moment.
- Did someone throw in a manual for the stranded capsule here? - Charles chuckled half-jokingly, trying to take his mind off his anxiety.
Lena ignored the joke, clutching the tablet in her hand. - 'With no contact with the base... how much oxygen do we have? - She asked, staring at the screen.
- 'For 48 hours,' Zosia replied, glancing at the flashing indicators. - 'But if we enter the planet's atmosphere without control...'
Charles walked to the back of the capsule where, through a panoramic window, the rings stretching below could be seen. At one point he spotted a flash in one of them, which shimmered unnaturally bright. He nodded to the rest of the team.
- Check this out. I swear, something's moving down there. - He pointed to a bright spot that seemed to be slowly changing position.
Lena switched the tablet to zoom mode. - It's impossible... It looks like... a building? Or a platform? After all, no one should be here.
Zosia felt a strange shudder. Until now, all three of them had only experienced space through screens and textbooks, but now something was really, disturbingly happening in space. At the same instant, the capsule shook, as if something had touched it from outside. The warning systems beeped and the atmospheric light from outside flicked purple.
Charles could not take his eyes off the platform, which was growing rapidly, as if an unknown force was pulling the capsule towards it. Zosia pressed the emergency alarm, although she was aware that their signal was unlikely to get anywhere.
Suddenly, an unidentified signal appeared in the communications panel. Short pulses, repeating at regular intervals. Lena looked at the others with growing concern.
- 'Someone... or something... is trying to contact us,' she whispered.
At that moment the capsule began to rotate, and an unknown power pulled them closer and closer to the platform on the ring. The screens trembled from another series of pulses. The three teenagers looked after each other in silence, ready for what might await them beyond the safe windows of the capsule....
