Spiral in the map drawer
The rain drummed against the roof of the city library until the windows trembled. Iga and Olek hid in the map reading room, behind a bookcase. Mrs Renata coughed at the counter and counted the pages of the catalogue. She was about to say when the storm would pass, but time was running out. The door to the storeroom was a hand's width apart. Olek whispered: "We'll just have a look and then come back, agreed, Iga?"
Inside it smelled of dust, glue and distant water. On the wall stood an old cabinet with flat drawers. The seventh drawer squeaked and slid out a piece by itself. Iga grabbed the brass handle, very slowly, carefully. On the map was their Market Square, but the park was turning into a bay. Thin rivers flowed through the street, like silver threads. A spiral was drawn at the edge, slightly smudged with a finger. "Is this a new edition?" asked Iga, although she knew it wasn't.
A faint glow surrounded the spiral and lines rose from the paper. There was a rustling in the air, as if someone was unfurling wet sails. Olek touched the shore and withdrew his hand as if burned. "Cold as a river in April," he whispered. "And alive." An image of a beach with a black, crooked pillar swirled in the depths. Seagulls and ringing could be heard, but without source. The clatter of keys came from the corridor. The door to the hall creaked open. A spiral vortex moved suddenly and tugged at Iga's sleeve. Iga grabbed Olek, and the drawer pulled them like electricity. "Let go!" hissed Olek, but it was far too late....
