Did You Know?

Spark over the Towers

Spark over the Towers
Through the dirty panes of the underpass, the lights of the city looked like fuzzy patches of paint on damp paper. Lena pulled her hood deeper over her head and quickened her stride, her shoes clattering loudly against the wet tiles. It was after 8pm and she should have been home long ago. None of her friends liked this part of town: old office blocks all around, abandoned for months, and everywhere traces that life had once boiled here. Now, apart from the crackle of neon lights and the distant echo of traffic, there was almost complete silence. Despite this, her brother Bartek and friend Zuzka insisted on meeting here. "We have to see it with our own eyes!" wrote Bartek an hour ago. Lena wasn't sure what it was about, but her brother's voice always had a hint of excitement that acted as a magnet for her. She walked down the stairs to level -1, where they met at the rusty railing. Zuzka was already there, with her inherent camera slung around her neck, and Bartek was whistling excitedly under his breath. Lena sat down beside them on the cold wall. - 'Okay, I can't believe I came here,' she muttered. - Why are we here? Bartek smiled broadly. - 'You've got to see this. I swear, it's not a joke. Zuzka was already taking pictures of the old advertising posters, but she looked at Lena and smiled in agreement. - There's something going on here. We just don't know what,' she said in a whisper. At that moment the lights in the tunnel went out. All three of them froze. For a few seconds there was complete darkness, as if someone had covered the passage with a black sheet. Lena felt Bartek grab her arm. She waited for her eyes to adjust to the darkness, but the light did not return. And then... something blue flashed from the side of the stairs leading to the surface. A streak of light slid across the wall and - for a split second - Lena saw the shadow of her own hand light up with a bluish glow. - Did you see! - she exclaimed, but Zuzka and Bartek stood as if paralysed, staring at her with wide-open eyes. Lena reflexively raised her hand. A shimmering energy danced between her fingers, and she felt something unfamiliar growing inside her. Her own skin felt as if it had heated up, but it didn't hurt - on the contrary, she felt a surge of strength. A clatter sounded from the distance, as if someone was running down the stairs. The light went out and the tunnel was once again plunged into darkness. Lena, Zuzka and Bartek stood motionless as they heard the approaching footsteps. Who or what was coming remained a mystery - Lena did not yet know that this night would change their lives forever.
