Signal on the roof
Maja knelt on the roof of the block and turned down the radio.
The evening lights of the city resembled spilled stars on the ground.
Next to her, Olek held a satellite bowl made of colander and foil.
Their sky scanner was created from cables and old toys.
Cosmos, please speak up, whispered Maja into the microphone.
Today they were going to try to catch the echo of a passing orbital station.
Mum thought they were playing games, so they turned off the windows.
The wind pushed the strings and the roof creaked like an old deck.
Suddenly a clear, even five-tone rhythm buzzed in the headphones.
It's not a storm, said Olek, it's someone calling us.
On the phone screen, lines began to form a map.
A dot flashed and glided towards their block.
The caption next to it read: MAJA, ACCEPT.
The noise turned into clicks, like keys at a teacher's house.
Maja squeezed the microphone and said her name, very clearly.
She was answered by another sequence, longer and already melodious.
The dot on the map was approaching along Liberation Street, fast and straight.
The air trembled, as if the roof were breathing along with the city.
Out of the darkness from the east came a small black shape.
It had no lights, just a buzzing sound and the smell of ozone.
It flew past the chimney and hovered above them, like a dragonfly.
A narrow gap with a pale light spread out in its side.
Maja drew in air and squeezed Olek's sleeve.
A quiet knocking came from inside, as if someone was counting to three.
Olek picked up the antenna, although his hands trembled slightly.
Blue sparks fell from the device, like fine snow.
The shape tilted, as if listening to their whispers.
Three thin legs slid out from underneath, ready to land.
A new word appeared on the screen: OPEN.
The knocking repeated: one, two.... and then something touched the antenna.
