Shadows under the Bridge of Silence
The late afternoon by the river was full of heavy, stormy air. Kacper, Lena and Wojtek met at the old Bridge of Silence, a place shrouded in rumour that one could supposedly hear one's own thoughts aloud there at night. It was a place where none of their peers went without a reason. Kacper, however, had just the reason today - his heart was aching after an argument with his father, and Wojtek was scuffing his shoes on the gravel with his head down, thinking about his parents' next separation. Lena, usually cheerful, looked at the world with apparent calmness, although her hand trembled slightly, hidden in her jacket pocket.
"What, are you guys scared?" - chuckled Kacper with a forced smile, trying to relieve the tension. The bridge, rusty and ivy-covered, seemed to follow them with its gaze. Beneath it, instead of the usual noise of the river, there was a strange echo today, as if the river was whispering in other people's voices.
"Kacper, see this!" - Lena pointed to a dark recess in the support. She looked in first; the boys moved behind her. Inside, it smelled of wet moss and rust. But what impressed them most were the shadows - not quite their own. These shadows had strange shapes, pulsating, changing. One was all rippling lines, as if it felt anxious. The other was shrinking and growing, as if it was sobbing. The third flared red, like anger that had found no outlet.
Lena reached out her hand and the shadow moved, touching her fingers. She felt a cold shudder and in that moment all three heard their own voices, repeating their most hidden fears, but not in thought - the voices reverberated around the alcove, mixing with the sound of running water. They each froze, looking at each other in horror as one of the shadows suddenly detached itself from the wall and slowly crept towards them.
Then they heard footsteps just above the bridge. Someone else was approaching the mysterious place, and the shadows began to move faster, heading straight towards them....
