Shadows over the Old Lyceum
The old high school on Węgierska Street always seemed to Niechciuk to be a somewhat peculiar place. Maybe it was because of the creaking staircase, maybe because of the perpetually leaking gutters or the auditorium ceiling full of cracks that resembled a map of an unknown world. But most disconcerting of all were the nights.
No one ever stayed in the school after dark - except for the caretaker on duty, Mr Wladek, who supposedly had the keys to all the doors, even those that no one had opened for years. But that day, as the shadows in the corridors began to take strange shapes, Noemi felt something she couldn't explain.
It was June. The hot, sultry afternoon had turned unexpectedly into a thunderstorm. The whole school trembled from the powerful thunder and the lights flickered. Noemi sighed in exasperation, packing her textbooks into her backpack by the last bench. The last one left in the classroom was Janek - the loner type, perpetually with his nose in a comic book. Just now he was immersed in reading again: "Supernova X".
- 'Noemi, did you see that? - Janek suddenly raised his head, his eyes dilated with surprise. Outside the window something flashed past, like the shadow of a bird... but too fast, too unnaturally.
Noemi shrugged her shoulders, although she herself felt an icy shiver on the back of her neck. They moved along the corridor together. At the door to the sports warehouse they met Susie, who was looking for her lost headphone. Always confident, this time a little anxious.
- Did you hear that? - She asked in a whisper. - Somewhere in the basement something is throbbing. I don't want to go down alone, but if you guys can help, we'll get through this quickly.
They went down. The cellars smelled of old books and dampness. The door to one of the storerooms was ajar, although it should have been locked. As they entered, they felt a chill that pierced them to the core.
Then something difficult to describe happened. Janek felt as if time had slowed down for a moment - he could almost see every dust speck falling, every sound echoing strangely. Noemi, on the other hand, crouched down, instinctively holding her breath, and suddenly her gaze pierced the darkness - she could see everything extremely clearly. Zuza, on the other hand, when she felt irritated, reflexively reached for her phone, which just... hovered in the air, held by an invisible force.
For a few seconds they understood that something had changed. Something they cannot grasp with their minds. A deafening sound suddenly came from the shadows behind the crate, as if someone had dropped an iron bar. Everyone held their breath.
Should they run away or follow the invisible? A quiet voice rang out from behind the cellar door: - You are not here by chance...
And then everything around went out.
