Shadows over the City of Lights

Shadows over the City of Lights
Nicodemus has always felt different. If someone had asked him why, he wouldn't have been able to answer. He was twenty years old, studying computer science at a polytechnic university in a big, bustling city where the streetlights never went out and people hurried around even in the middle of the night. He lived in an apartment building on Miodowa Street, right next to an old park that, especially at dusk, seemed full of hidden stories. The second anniversary of the great blackout was approaching - an event that lit up Nikodem with anxiety. It was then that his hands first flashed with a soft glow, although he couldn't remember exactly what had happened. From then on, he avoided the dark, and turned on his bedside lamp even before the sun went over the horizon. That evening he felt an electricity in the air that could not be explained by wires. The park looked different - the shadows of the trees slipped down the alleys like smoke, and in places the quiet whisper of leaves could be heard. Nicodemus, unable to find peace in his room, decided to go out for a walk. In his pocket he had his smartphone, his flat key and a vaguely trembling hand. As he walked past an old monument, he suddenly felt a piercing chill. He looked at his hands - they had started to glow with an uneven, silvery light again. Disturbing noises came from afar, and the lights of the lanterns began to fade one by one, as if something was taking their energy. Nicodemus stood as if he had been caught off guard, looking around nervously. That's when he noticed a silhouette - a tall, cloaked figure standing just inside the park entrance. The figure was looking straight at him, and its shadow was moving against the laws of physics, stretching out towards him. Should Nicodemus run away or, on the contrary, try to use his mysterious light against the stranger? His heart beat harder when he first heard a quiet voice coming straight from the shadows: "We've been waiting for you..."
