Shadows in Cygnus orbit
The stars outside the panoramic window shone coldly, reflecting in the control room's chrome panel. Commander Livia Jarosz sat silently, analysing the latest sensor readings. It was four o'clock in the morning standard station time, and the rest of the crew were snoring in their sleep pods. The silence was only broken by a soft rustling as her assistant, Lucan, entered the control room with a mug of steaming coffee.
- 'Something going on? - He asked, sitting down next to her.
Livia did not answer immediately, staring at the signal flashing on the screen. - 'We're receiving a transmission. Weak, erratic, but...' - She paused, zooming in on the frequency with her fingers. - 'It's not a code we know.
Lucan furrowed his brow. - Civilian? Military? Artificial?
- I don't know. But the source is just beyond the boundary of the planet's gravitational field. Between the orbital debris. - She zoomed in on the image from the external camera.
A dark shape appeared on the display, almost invisible against the background of the stars. Its surface was strangely dull, as if it absorbed light. Smooth, devoid of marks, irregular.... The object seemed to pulsate - once it was approaching the station, once it was moving away.
- We should wake the others. - Lucan tried to hide his nervousness.
- Not yet. - Livia looked at him quickly. - 'We've already sent a welcome signal. We're waiting for a response.
At that moment an alarm signal sounded. The lighting in the control room went out, replaced by a flashing red emergency light. The main computer displayed the message: "UNKNOWN OBJECT HAS GAINED ACCESS TO THE STATION'S SYSTEMS".
Livia and Lucan exchanged terrified glances. Suddenly, the speakers buzzed and the same strange, erratic signal came from them. Before they had time to react, the control room door closed automatically and the air in the room began to thicken, as if an invisible presence had suddenly appeared there....
