Shadow under the Shining Lantern
The night smelled of lime pollen and the quiet street of the Old Town was drowned in the glow of yellow lanterns. Sonia walked carefully, dragging her bike behind her on a punctured tyre. She was almost at the house when she noticed an unusual light seeping through the door of an old watchmaker's workshop. Although the hour was late, the owner never left the light on overnight.
Sonia pressed the handle. The door creaked open and a strange chill pierced the air. Behind the counter, against a wall full of ticking clocks, an elderly man in a black coat stood motionless. He was silent, looking straight towards her. It was then that Sonia sensed that something was wrong. Everything - the sounds, the movement of the clocks' hands, even the pollen in the air - suddenly froze. The whole world stopped moving.... except for her.
Raising her hand, Sonia discovered that she could move dust particles suspended in the air. With her heart pounding like a hammer, she felt a strange energy build up inside her. She realised that she had stopped time.
But before she could do anything, another figure entered the studio. She wore a white hood tightly covering her face and held a small silver watch. 'I've been waiting for you, Sonja'. - she whispered.
Sonia reflexively stepped back, sensing that this person knew of her secret. Time continued to stand still, and she could sense a growing tension in the air. Who was the mysterious figure? What did she want and could Sonia harness her power before it was too late?
