Shadow under the clock
A frosty wind carried the lonely sound of a beating clock through the deserted town. Leon, a student of archaeology, stood under the old tower by the market square, looking at the rusting hands. He knew that none of the locals had dared to enter there for years. He had always been fascinated by stories of underground passages and hidden chambers, but the tower was different - it seemed to follow anyone who approached it.
That night the clouds parted, revealing pale moonlight. Leon entered through a creaking door, and its sound echoed through the empty chambers. On the walls hung old portraits of the inhabitants, in whose gazes something disturbing seemed to lurk. A winding staircase led to the top, its steps creaking under his weight. Each step brought him closer to the mystery mentioned in his recently found diary: "At midnight the mechanism awakens - and then the shadow chooses its guardian."
On the top floor, by the clock mechanism, Leon found an old brass key. The mechanism did indeed seem to tremble in anticipation, and the hands stopped a minute before midnight. There was a smell of dust and rust in the air, but also something inexplicable - as if announcing a great discovery or a great danger. Suddenly, a quiet whisper, soft and almost human, came from behind the wall: "The time has come. Open the door, if you dare..."
Leon hesitated, holding the key in his trembling hand. A shadow moved in the corner of the tower, and the clock began to strike midnight....
