Did You Know?

Shadow over the Old Town

Shadow over the Old Town
In the evening, as the lights of the tenements of the Old Town reflected in the puddles after the spring rain, Kacper saw his reflection in the school window for the first time. In front of him appeared not only his own confused face, but also a fuzzy, purple aura that hovered around him like a mist. Sure, he would have been frightened by it before, but the last few weeks had been so strange that the sight hadn't actually made any impression on him. At least until the front door fluttered against the frame. - Kacper! - cried Lena, appearing in the corridor with her bag slung over her shoulder. - Have you come? - Of course. - Kacper smiled uncertainly. - Has something happened again? - Come to the biology room. Everyone's already there. - Lena pulled him by the sleeve. Janek and Zuza were already waiting in the room. Janek was turning a metal pen in his fingers, which every now and then started levitating and fell with a bang on the tabletop. Zuza had headphones in her ears and, with a flick of her hand, made the buttons of the player switch without touching them. - 'Hi, Kacper,' she muttered. - 'There's something new. We saw the lights on the roof of the old hospital. No one should be there at this hour. - Again? - Janek put down his pen and looked at the window, beyond which the hospital roof was darkening. - Do you think it's the same man as last time? Lena squeezed in between them and put a picture taken with her phone on the table: a blurred silhouette, a flashing red glow and something that resembled a glare in the top floor window. - 'We need to check it today before anyone finds out,' she said seriously. - 'After all, I guess that's why... we have what we have. Kacper wasn't sure if he was really ready to use his abilities again. Things had gotten out of hand last time. But Lena was already moving towards the door with determination. - Come on. If we don't go, we won't find out what's going on. - she threw. They walked out into the empty corridor together, their footsteps echoing off the walls. Kacper felt a shiver run down his spine. Maybe it was fear, or maybe something completely new. The exit door creaked quietly as they stepped outside. The night was thick with lanterns scattering only scraps of darkness. The hospital stood like a black spot at the end of the street. Kacper clutched a pocket torch in his hand. - Ready? - whispered Lena. At that moment, a sharp blue flash appeared on the hospital roof. All four held their breath as they watched a silhouette in a black cloak approach the edge of the roof. Kacper felt the aura around him begin to swirl faster and faster, as if reacting to the stranger's presence. Before anyone had time to say anything, the figure on the roof suddenly turned and looked directly at them. Although they were hidden in the shade of a tree, Kacper was sure they had been spotted. At the same moment Zuza shouted: - 'Oi, he's got something in his hand! The figure raised his hand, and a second, even brighter flash pierced the sky above the Old Town....
