Shadow over the Fjord: The Saga of Skuld and the Lost Window
The stone walls of the Vargheim fortress remembered hundreds of winters, and yet every night seemed to make a new mark on them. Skuld, Halgir's daughter, squatted closer to the fire, rubbing her fingers that were numb from the damp and cold. In front of her, on the carved bench, the rest of the team had gathered: the stoic Gunnar, with his inseparable axe at his belt, the somewhat ironic Eirik and Halldis, who could fish as well as fight.
The village by the fjord had been plagued not only by storms in recent times, but also by mysterious disappearances of cattle and rumours of a sinister figure sneaking around the abandoned fortress of Stromvik at night. Someone, or something, had its lair there. Skuld didn't believe in ghosts - her father had always said that the biggest monsters were those who breathe the same air as us. But the old people in the village whispered about an ancient window in the heart of Stromvik, through which it was said you could see not only the past, but also the future, if you dared to look through it on the night of the solstice.
That night was the solstice. Skuld, with her heart beating faster than usual, stood up, adjusted her coat and walked to the entrance. Before she could open the door, Gunnar grabbed her arm.
- Are you sure you want to go there? - He asked quietly, seeing the shadow of uncertainty in her eyes.
She answered only with a nod. The four of them set off through the fog, heading towards the ruins of Stromvik, looming in the distance. When they reached the great gate, Halldis struggled to push back the moss-covered stones. Inside, there was a smell of dampness and rust. Their footsteps echoed through the empty chambers until they finally found themselves in front of the legendary window.
It was narrow, surrounded by intricate runes that no one could read anymore. Eirik, noticing a strange light flickering on the other side, took a step forward. Suddenly there was a rustle, as if someone - or something - was moving in the depths of the dark chamber. At the same moment, a shadow appeared on the glass, quite like a human silhouette, but too tall and too thin to be human.
The team held their breath. Skuld slowly raised her torch, ready to take the first step inside, when they heard a quiet whisper just outside:
- You must not look through that window....
They froze in stillness, and silence filled the entire room, as if time had suddenly stood still.
