Shadow over the Fjord of the Icy Mountains
In the long house, on the edge of the fjord of the Glacier Mountains, the wood crackling in the fireplace cast an orange light on Sven's face. He sat together with Tora and Ulva, his younger sister and best friend, talking about what the coming spring would bring.
That evening, as the north wind howled outside the window, their thoughts wandered towards the Blue Valley - the place where the legendary chief Eirik the Iron Wolf is said to have once settled. The elders had told the children to stay away from the abandoned settlement, but curiosity, as usual, proved stronger than the warnings.
- 'I've heard strange noises there after dark,' whispered Ulva, glancing over her shoulder at the door.
Sven smiled with superiority:
- Probably the wind rustling the old roofs. Or foxes rummaging through the ruins.
Tora glanced at both boys, her eyes sparkling. - I'd like to see it with my own eyes. Maybe we can find some of Eirika's forgotten treasure?
The plan came together quickly: the next day, at dawn, they would go to the Blue Valley. They told no one - not even their mother, who would have thought such an idea the stupidest thing in the world.
At dawn they set off towards the valley. The cold wind pinched their cheeks and thin sheets of ice crackled under their boots. When they reached the first old buildings, the sun was barely breaking through the heavy clouds.
The ruins of the settlement looked different from what they had expected. The door of one of the houses stood open, as if someone had just opened it. There was something strange hanging on the door: a rune carved into the wood with a knife, which neither of them had ever seen before.
- 'Someone was here before us,' whispered Tora, kneeling down beside it.
Sven took a closer look at the rune. - 'That doesn't look like Eirik's mark...'
At that moment, a dragging sound came to them from behind the nearest hut - as if someone was combing through the snow with a big stick. Ulva squeezed her brother's shoulders.
- What was that? - she asked quietly.
Suddenly, a short, broken hiss tore through the air, and a tall figure in a long, dark cloak emerged from the darkness between the buildings. The stranger's eyes flashed under the hood....
