Did You Know?

Shadow over the city

Shadow over the city
Warsaw was drowning in a thick, silvery fog. The streetlights were turning into fuzzy points of light, and the sounds of the street quietened, muffled by the unexpected, sticky silence. Michael stood on the ninth floor of his block of flats, leaning against the windowsill. He liked to watch the city at night - but this night felt different. Fog began to creep into his room through the open window, chilling his skin. At the same time, two estates away, Lena was running through the park, trying to catch the last tram. The fog wrapped around her body thicker and thicker, making her feel light, almost transparent. She stopped breathlessly under an old oak tree and wondered if she should walk home. Michael felt a sudden shudder. His gaze was drawn to some movement in the street below the block. He suddenly realised that he was no longer looking through his own eyes. He was seeing from above, as if his vision had separated from his body and was hovering over the pavement. Frightened, he tried to close his eyelids, but the image did not disappear. Lena sank down on the bench, trying to get her breathing under control. Then she heard a whisper - soft, as if someone was speaking right next to her ear: "Are you ready?" The girl looked around frightened. At the same moment, she felt her body gain incredible speed and her movements became intuitive. Before she had time to think, she found herself at the other end of the park, not knowing how she had moved there. Michael was trying to come out of a strange trance. Suddenly he heard the blast of an alarm siren - loud, inhuman, tearing up the peaceful night. His gaze, still hovering somewhere above the city, registered Lena's silhouette. Their gazes met for a split second, even though they were miles apart. The fog thickened further and the city trembled under an unknown force. Could it be that their powers were linked? Was the siren a warning - or an invitation? Before anything had time to happen, the night was suddenly cut by a luminous streak....
