Shadow over Erithion
Elias ran breathlessly through the misty forest, no longer knowing what was dream and what was waking. Only a moment ago he was sitting in the library, staring at a leather-bound volume he had never seen before. The pages rustled under his fingers, the letters swirled, until suddenly - the world swirled with them.
He woke up here, on the edge of Erithion forest, where the air smelled of rain and the promise of something unnamed. Scarlet leaves fell silently on the moss-covered path, and the moon seemed all too close, as if it was watching him with an unsettling attention. Elias adjusted his trim backpack and set off ahead, unsure if all this was really happening.
He blinked as a silhouette flashed between the trees. A girl with her hair braided into a thick plait was gracefully languishing between the trunks. She was wearing a dark leather coat and high sole shoes; in her hand she held what looked like a long, curved knife. For a split second their gazes met.
- 'You're not from around here,' she said without greeting. Her voice was as sharp as ice needles. - You'd better hurry before they get you.
Before he had time to reply, he heard a clatter in the distance. It was not the usual sound of footsteps - the forest vibrated from the echo of heavy, metallic feet. The girl nodded into the woods and threw a short: - Come on, or you won't be coming back.
Elias hesitated only for a moment. He felt under his skin that everything could depend on this decision. He set off after the girl, through thicket and ferns, until they reached a cleft overlooking a town hidden between the hills. Peculiar luminous creatures glided over the rooftops, and shadows seemed to live their own lives in the streets.
The girl, introducing herself as Aila, explained that Erithion is a place where the boundaries between worlds are as thin as a spider's thread. - Recently, these boundaries have started to crack," she added with seriousness. - 'Someone opened the Gate and let out something we should never meet.
Suddenly the whole world sank into an ominous blue light. A figure emerged among the shadows - powerful, armed with glittering blades, with eyes shining like burning coals. Aila gave Elias a brief glance:
- Decide, Elias. Either we hide or we face it.
At the same moment, the echo of footsteps quieted, and light began to thicken around them, arranging itself into shapes Elias had never seen before....
