Did You Know?

Shadow at Station Stop

Shadow at Station Stop
Adam had always considered himself an ordinary guy. He wasn't a primate, he didn't play first fiddle in the school band, he didn't even have a dog or a cat. But he did have one weakness - old railway stations. There was something fascinating about the empty platforms, the rusted lanterns and the cool air permeated with the puzzling smell of iron. Whenever he could, he would sneak off in the evenings to an abandoned station outside the city, with a rucksack full of sandwiches and a sketchbook. That evening, 19 March, the sky was unnaturally black. Adam clutched his rucksack and through a broken fence made his way into the station area. The old brick walls glistened in the faint moonlight, and the wind moved shreds of newspaper across the mossy cobblestones. He heard the clatter of a train on the far track, although no line had run here for years. He walked slowly along the tracks, which disappeared somewhere behind a tangle of scrub. It was then that he saw her. She was standing alone under a rusty sign that read "Station Stop". She was wearing a long navy blue dress, like from pre-war films, and a large hat. Her face was too pale for someone who had just arrived by train. Adam rubbed his eyes, but the girl was not disappearing. - Hi... - ' he mouthed, feeling his voice tighten in his throat. She looked up at him. Her gaze was piercing, as if she could see right through him. For a moment, they were both silent, hearing only the hum of the wind and a quiet sound, reminiscent of a mechanical clock. - Are you from here? - She asked, and her voice seemed strangely alien to Adam, a bit like listening to an old gramophone record. - Well, yes... I mean, I live nearby. Do you? - He replied, raising his eyebrows. The girl didn't answer for a moment, just looked at the station clock, whose hands were moving at an unnatural speed. Suddenly, the lantern light went out. The wind seemed to wail louder, and everything was plunged into darkness for a moment. As the lantern light flickered back on, Adam saw that the old platforms were no longer around them, and the station looked completely different: freshly repainted, with a crowd of elegantly dressed people and gleaming carriages with the sign "1937". Adam felt a piercing shudder. He looked at the girl, who smiled slightly and whispered: - Now do you understand why I am here? But before Adam had time to reply, a loud whistle sounded. A tall man in a grey coat emerged from the crowd, heading towards them. Adam felt his heart begin to pound. Were they able to return to their time? And who was she really? At the same moment a train was approaching from the distance, the rumble of its wheels impossible to ignore. Adam looked at the girl, waiting for her to make a move as the world around him swirled once more....
