School under the Sign of Lightning
Primary School No. 67 in Warsaw's Bemowo district looked like any other. Brick buildings, a rusty gate and a football pitch where someone was always making up for being late. But for Iza, Kuba and Arek, this year was going to be special - and not just because of the upcoming exams.
Iza had always known that she was different from the others. For a few weeks now, she had been able to sense when someone was lying - it wasn't a matter of intuition, she literally felt a strange pressure in her stomach at the slightest untruth. Kuba, who until six months ago was the most average boy in class, suddenly discovered that he could hear people's thoughts - even whispered gossip in the corridor, which he had no right to hear. Arek, the youngest of the siblings, was only fourteen years old, but when he was nervous, the air around him would start to crackle and objects would tremble on the benches as if under the influence of an invisible current.
It started in November, when a violent storm passed over Bemowo after a gale. Nobody knew why. One day, after lessons, they met in the biology room - where everything seemed less normal. They wanted to test their skills, so they made a list: 'Experiments. For initiates only.'
- 'Let's see what happens if we concentrate together,' suggested Iza, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
Kuba sat down opposite her and immediately felt a buzz in his head, as if someone had suddenly turned the radio on to maximum. Arek squeezed his hands together, blue sparks flashed around his fingers.
Suddenly something banged in the corridor. The door to the classroom opened with a slam and the physics teacher, Mr Smolarek, appeared on the threshold. Usually calm, this time he looked shocked and frightened.
- 'Come with me immediately,' he said quietly but firmly. - You have to see something. It can't wait.
The three friends exchanged communicative glances. What could have happened that even Mr Smolarek, always composed, looked as if he had seen a ghost himself?
They followed the teacher out, walking down the dark, empty corridor. The closer they got to the door to the cellar, the more Arek felt the air around him begin to tremble. Izabella bit her lip and Kuba tried not to catch the flurry of alien thoughts that suddenly seemed to be pushing in from every direction.
They stopped in front of the door to the school cellar. Mr Smolarek gave them a serious look and swung the door open. Beyond the threshold a glow lit up, and in the midst of it emerged a shape they had never seen before....
