School on Wheels, How the Bus Replaced the Classroom
The first day of the teachers' strike promised to be like winning the lottery. No lessons, just echoes wandering through the school corridors and an empty gymnasium. Everyone was expected to hang out in the common room, but for a few brave ones - namely me, Kasia and Maks - it was a chance to do something no one had ever tried before. To find the answer to the question: is it really scary on the school bus, as the seventh-graders claim?
The plan was simple: sneak into an abandoned bus, check every nook and cranny, document everything and publish the coolest report in the history of the school newspaper. Kasia had a smartphone, Maks a torch and two packets of jelly beans. I had courage, or rather an excess of it, as I was soon to find out.
We arrived at the bus stop after the third bell. The bus was standing as usual, painted in nasty colours, with a sign reading "Stanislaw Lekkopir School - special task bus". The doors were open. This was already the first signal, but then who would pay attention to details? We entered, looking around uncertainly, but of course Maks immediately decided to get behind the wheel. Kasia commented on everything as she went along, recording short videos.
Just as we were about to leave (because there was clearly nothing strange on the bus other than a pile of candy bar papers), suddenly something started to happen. The engine coughed, the lights blinked and the doors closed with a bang. No one touched the key, yet the bus slowly started!
- Someone is here! - exclaimed Kasia, looking around panickedly at the empty seats.
- Is it a racer or what? - Maks grabbed the steering wheel, trying to swerve it, but the bus was unresponsive. We sped across the empty car park, passing a bewildered caretaker. The bus sped by, ignoring all traffic rules, and strange symbols began to flicker on the dashboard: a pizza, a llama, a spaceship.
Suddenly a voice from the loudspeaker, unlike any of the teachers, announced:
- Dear passengers, it is time to begin your journey. Please fasten your seatbelts and prepare for something more than a simple trip to the museum.
Before our hearts could stop beating like crazy, the bus turned sharply and.... drove straight into the fog, which should not have appeared in the middle of the school playground at all.
We weren't sure whether we were dreaming or really going to an unknown place driven by a talking bus. But one thing was clear - this adventure was just beginning.
