Santa's disappearing bells
On Christmas Eve, Zosia woke up very early. Outside the window, snow was falling and the air smelled of gingerbread. The Christmas tree twinkled with lights like little stars. Suddenly, she heard sleigh bells — but then they fell silent. Zosia whispered quietly, “Santa, where are you now?”
Under the Christmas tree lay a card with glitter on it. On it, someone had written: “I have lost my bells.” Signature: “Santa Claus.” Beside it was a small, silent bell. Zosia called out to her brother, “Janek, come quickly!” The bell showed stars and a tiny map. A thin line led straight to the attic. The children took a torch and warm slippers. Mum called from the kitchen, “Just be careful, my treasures.”
The stairs creaked as they went upstairs. On the steps were small, snowy footprints. The attic door was ajar and cold air drifted out. A breeze blew from inside, and something hummed. Zosia shone her torch into a dark corner. Something red flashed behind an old trunk. Suddenly, the bell in her hand trembled. Someone whispered from the darkness, “Help me now…”
