Riddle on the Last Floor
It was after nine in the evening when Igor, Lena and Maks met behind the school's playing field. Most of the students had long since left the grounds, but they had a different plan for the night. For a week there had been rumours of strange sounds and flashing lights on the top floor of the main building - a part of the school that had been locked up since renovation. The police and teachers said it was just draughts and old wires, but Lena found a photo on a forum of a blurry silhouette in the window - taken the same night the alarm went off unexpectedly for an hour.
Sneaking into the darkness, they held torches and Igor's phone, which had the best battery. Through the ajar door they stepped inside. The echo of footsteps echoed off the cracking tiles. Climbing the creaking stairs, they felt a cold shiver. Maks tried to joke, but no one was laughing.
On the second floor, by the locked door to the physics office, Igor noticed a star-like symbol carved with a knife. Lena wrote it down in her notebook, and Maks muttered quietly: "It's definitely a joke." They moved higher, leaving behind a shadow that seemed to follow them from the end of the corridor.
Finally they reached the top floor. The air was heavy here, and a thick layer of dust covered everything. Suddenly, Lena pulled Igor by the sleeve. "Look!" - she whispered. Against the wall stood an old metal door barely visible behind a pile of cardboard boxes. On the door, right next to the handle, a barely visible red light was flashing.
- 'That's impossible,' said Maks. - After all, this part hasn't had electricity for years!
Before they had time to decide whether to open the door, someone... or something.... on the other side gently moved the handle and the light blinked harder.
