Passing through the Shadow Mirror
The attic of the old, abandoned house was covered in thick dust. Lena and Oskar went up there, armed with torches and curiosity - according to their grandmother, this place was supposed to hide secrets that nobody but the former owners knew about. Chests full of dusty books, cracked furniture and... a huge, dirty mirror that stood leaning against the wall, completely out of keeping with the rest of the junk.
It was the mirror that aroused their greatest curiosity. It was tall, in a frame carved with motifs of swirling dragons and glittering stars. Lena joked that maybe this mirror transported to other worlds, like in old novels.
- What if this is true? - said Oskar, carefully touching the surface of the glass. At the same moment, the surface trembled and a chill permeated the heavy air. For a second they seemed to see the reflection there - their faces, their silhouettes, the attic and... something else. A shadow moved across the mirror, smooth as the shadow of a cloud gliding across a meadow.
Without thinking, Lena placed her hand on the surface of the glass. There was a soft, quiet sound - as if someone had dragged a finger across the glass. The glass was icy cold, but... under her hand it began to yield, like the surface of water. Lena looked at Oskar, and he looked at her. A moment's hesitation. Then they both took a step forward.
Their bodies plunged into something they could not describe. Simultaneously light and sticky, dark and full of light. When they emerged on the other side of the mirror, they were no longer standing in a dusty attic, but in a vast stone square over which the scarlet, pulsating sun shone. Gateways to more places lurked around them: to forests, corridors, hills and rivers that, strangely, seemed to move, changing their shapes.
- Where are we? - Lena asked in a whisper.
They didn't have time to discover this, because a figure ran out from behind one of the nearest gates - with long, silvery hair and eyes that shone like emeralds. Behind her, footsteps grew louder and louder, and the air began to vibrate as if the world was about to fall apart.
Before Lena and Oskar had time to move, the mysterious figure looked deep into their eyes and whispered: - You have to run. They already know you are here.
At the same moment, something heavy wailed from the depths of the red corridors....
