Passing through the Glass Zodiac

Passing through the Glass Zodiac
The glass panes of the library windows sparkled in the light of a June afternoon. Lena, a seventeen-year-old lover of archival puzzles, had been wandering the dusty corridors of the old buildings on Matemblewska Street for several hours. The library was about to close for good, but for Lena - and her best friend, Filip - it was like a maze full of surprises. No one but them knew about the forgotten wing with the concrete staircase leading to the basement. There, among the cold walls, slumbered an old server room, the door to which was opened for them by an overburnt key found in an alcove behind a drama bookcase. When they descended, they were greeted by a chill and a pulsing, bluish light from inside the room. On one of the bookcases stood a huge sphere of glass, entwined with metal hoops that resembled the zodiacal constellations. Lena, fascinated by the unusual find, carefully touched one of the hoops. For a second she had the impression that the air was rippling like a heated summer, and then everything around her flashed with intense light. They woke up in a completely different place. Instead of a concrete basement, they were standing in a paved square, above which towered massive spiral towers of coloured glass. The high sky was punctuated by flocks of luminous birds. Philip looked at Lena with wide-open eyes: - Where are we? - He asked, wrinkling his eyebrows and looking around. Lena tried to control her trembling voice: - I think this is... another world. See these buildings, all the architecture is... unreal. A group of figures in strange masks resembling zodiac signs walked across the square. They stopped beside the young newcomers, exchanging whispered words in a language they did not know. The tallest of them, a figure in a lion mask, reached out and touched Lena's shoulder. A boy in a costume with blue spirals pointed them to a luminous gate in the depths of the square. Above it hung a symbol resembling a clock whose hands turned in reverse. Lena felt a strange quickening of her heartbeat and the certainty that their every step was being watched by dozens of pairs of eyes hidden between the glass towers. Philip grabbed her hand: - I don't think we have a choice. We have to go in there. They walked towards the gate. The clock stopped abruptly and the whole square swirled around them, as if the world was changing shape under their presence. A constellation flashed above their heads, creating a luminous trail leading into the unknown. In a moment they were about to cross the threshold of the gate, not knowing whether this was the beginning or the end of their extraordinary journey....
