Passage under the Old Mermaid
The ruins of the old Syrena cinema had long been a favourite meeting place for Tom and Lena. The city was slowly forgetting about the building, which had been vibrant years ago but was now hidden behind a thicket of wild bushes and graffiti.
That afternoon, the wind carried the sweet smell of burnt popcorn, and the light breaking through the hollow roof cast fantastic patterns on the floor. Tom, even though he was now seventeen, still felt a thrill of excitement as he peeked into the deserted corridors with his torch. Lena followed him, somewhat reluctant but curious.
"Do you think this story about the missing projectors is true?" - she asked. Tom shrugged his shoulders, but the thought of the mystery rekindled his childlike lust for adventure. At one point his gaze was caught by an unusual part of the floor behind an old screen. He had accidentally stepped on a faded tile that suddenly collapsed under his foot.
A quiet crunch sounded and an opening was revealed right in front of them. A dark tunnel led beneath the cinema and a strange metallic smell filled the air. Lena looked doubtfully at her brother. "Want to go in there? We're crazy."
But Tom was already pulling out his phone to light his way. They descended the old staircase carefully, and the corridor seemed endless. The walls were covered with mysterious drawings - stars, astrolabes, unfamiliar alphabet inscriptions. Eventually they reached a door. It was no ordinary door, however. The metal frame pulsed with a soft blue light, and the surface itself resembled motionless waves of water.
Lena reached out her hand, and her fingers dipped into the door's clear surface for a split second before suddenly disappearing. They both looked at each other in silence as a shadow-motion appeared on the other side of the portal that shouldn't have been there. Suddenly there was a deafening sound, as if someone or something was coming from inside....
