Passage under the Meteora Tower

Passage under the Meteora Tower
In the heart of the Glass Gate, a small town stretched between forests and lakes, stood an old observation tower known as the Meteor Tower. Built back in the days when dangers were looked out from it every day, it now looked like a relic from a completely different era. Residents avoided it by a wide margin, making it an ideal meeting place for people who liked to feel invisible. Klara, Bartek and Lena, three friends from their final year of high school, discovered the place by chance. It was a Friday evening, and they were fed up with the grey everyday life and were looking for something to take their minds off their impending graduation. So they brought drinks in thermoses, some blankets and a small radio to listen to music while sitting on top of the tower. It was then that Lena noticed something strange at the foot of the stone staircase - a small trapdoor, strewn with old leaves and brick fragments. - 'I don't think there's ever been a cellar entrance here,' muttered Bartek, watching curiously. - 'Or there was, but the city forgot about it,' replied Klara, already leaning over to remove the leaves. The flap gave way with a quiet rasp. There was complete darkness inside, but Lena took out a torch from her rucksack. They went down the narrow, damp stairs one by one. The air was cool and their own footsteps echoed off the walls. In the basement, on the wall exactly opposite the stairs, they noticed something no one had expected - a huge mural depicting a spiral made up of bright dots, as if someone had painted the Milky Way. - Seriously, it looks like... a portal to another world," Lena whispered, not taking her eyes off the painting. Then something even stranger happened. One of the spots flashed with a bluish light. A light mist began to emerge from the mural. Bartek reflexively took a step back, but Klara was already extending her hand towards the illuminated spot. The moment her fingers touched the wall, the world around them swirled. They heard crackling sounds and smelled ozone and dampness. The ground shook slightly underfoot. Then there was complete silence. When they opened their eyes, trees with silvery leaves surrounded them, the sky glittered with distant constellations and the air was suffused with an unfamiliar, irritating note. Behind them, they saw a luminous gate that slowly began to fade away. - Is this... still our city? - Lena asked in a whisper. Suddenly, a light shimmered in the treetops and an unfamiliar, strangely melodious voice came from the distance. The three friends looked at each other, understanding that there was no turning back - at least for now. And then, among the silver bushes, something moved....
