Did You Know?

Passage through the Rust Gate

Passage through the Rust Gate
Jarek lazily kicked a piece of metal, which rolled across the concrete with a clang. The overcast sky cast a pale blue light on the old thermal power station, and the boy thought it was the perfect setting for a thriller film. Lena, dressed in black, was pacing a few metres away, holding her phone in her fingers and lifting it up every now and then as if looking for a signal. - 'It's here,' she finally muttered, pointing to a wall lined with rust and graffiti. - 'I told you it was... different. The Rust Gate. That's what it was called among the locals: a curved section of iron wall surrounded by a massive, utterly rusting archway that loomed up as if someone had once tried to forge a door out of it. However, the door was never here. Legend had it that sometimes, in the middle of the night, the arch would flare up with light, and then all you had to do was enter.... to never be the same again. Lena tugged on Jarek's sleeve. - Look! - she whispered. A soft, pulsating light appeared in the centre of the arch. Jarek felt shivers run down his spine and his heart began to beat faster. The light grew brighter and brighter, as if someone was lighting more lamps behind an invisible curtain. Suddenly Lena, without hesitation, slid her hand into the luminous circle. Her hand disappeared and she looked at Jarek, smiling broadly. - It doesn't hurt! It's more like... liquid. Jarek swallowed his saliva, looking around nervously. Somewhere in the distance a cat was meowing, the wind stirred the cables hanging high, making them ring like bells. - Shall we go? - Lena looked defiantly, as if she herself couldn't wait any longer. Jarek rubbed his sweaty palm against his trousers. - 'One lives once,' he burbled and carefully moved his hand through the portal. He felt something cool and slippery under his fingers, as if he were plunging into very cold water. Both of them, holding their breath, took a step forward, feeling the world around them begin to swirl. Colours and sounds stretched out and the air became heavier, thick as cream. At one point, the ground beneath their feet disappeared. They were no longer in the CHP. Jarek opened his eyes and suddenly felt lighter. He was floating a few centimetres above the ground, and all around him stretched a landscape filled with strange colours and geometric shapes that seemed to move with their own rhythm. Lena stared in bewilderment at the huge silvery clock suspended in the sky, the hands spinning in opposite directions. Suddenly, a voice rang out at their feet - metallic and warm at the same time: - Welcome, newcomers. The time of your choice has just begun.... Jarek and Lena looked at each other, uncertain whether they were still dreaming or whether it was already another reality....
