Passage through the Old Mirror

Passage through the Old Mirror
Lena was never bored, even when her friend Michal complained that "there was nothing going on in this town". On the contrary, Lena always found something that could shake him out of his routine and make his heart beat faster. One hot June afternoon, they decided to go into the ruins of an old building on Zaulek Street. The building had been abandoned for years and was surrounded by a dense web of stories that circulated among the residents of the estate. Passing through a dark corridor, full of creaking planks and splatters of green paint, Lena stopped abruptly. Against the wall, behind a pile of mossy books, stood a huge, carved mirror. Its frame was covered in cobwebs and glittered with gold, as if someone had just wiped it with a handkerchief. Michael came closer, and his reflection in the glass seemed strangely hazy, as if he were looking at himself through water. - 'Check it out,' Lena whispered, touching the glass with her fingertips. At the same moment, a cool breeze cut through the air so strongly that they both almost jumped away. The surface of the mirror rippled, creating a silvery mist. Michael froze, but Lena was unstoppable - she brought her face close to the mirror and saw in it something that looked like a wide, cobbled path leading through an unknown world covered in sapphire grass. - I see something! - she called out in a whisper. Michael looked too, and after just a moment they saw the same thing: behind the sheet of glass, another world stretched out. A pair of human-like beings appeared on the path, but their eyes shone with an amber light and particles of golden dust levitated under their feet. Suddenly, a soft voice rang out from within the mirror, sounding more in their thoughts than in their ears: "Only the brave can cross the border. Are you ready?" Michael looked at Lena - her eyes were shining with excitement. He himself was no longer sure whether it was fear or fascination squeezing his throat. Without a word they grasped each other's hands. The surface of the mirror began to pulsate more and more strongly. The light in the room dimmed and shadows appeared around them, which seemed to dance to the rhythm of their accelerated breaths. As Lena lifted her leg to take the first step towards the shimmering portal, they felt something draw them inwards with a force they could not resist. Everything around them turned into a whirl of colours and sounds - until suddenly darkness fell. And just when it seemed like everything was coming to an end, they heard quiet murmurs and a blue light flashed in the distance....
