Passage among the Granite Columns

Passage among the Granite Columns
Late evening, on the roof of a long-abandoned astronomical observatory on the outskirts of Warsaw. The air had a cool, metallic aftertaste, and the lights of the city resembled blurred light bulbs under her eyelids. Anka ran her finger over the damp railing, glancing at Kacper and Ola, who were shifting impatiently from foot to foot. "Are you sure you want to go in there?" - she asked in a slightly playful tone, but curiosity trembled in her voice. Ola, as usual the bravest, entered the circle made of granite columns standing between the weeds, in the middle of the main terrace. Kacper drew in the air loudly and stepped in behind her, wielding a torch. Barely visible, moss-covered steps led inside. Anka joined her friends - she felt the roughness of the stones under her feet, and for a moment it seemed to her that the light of the torch was reflecting off something intangible, pulsating in the air. In the centre of the circular structure lay a flat slab of stone. Geometric symbols and patterns reminiscent of constellations were carved into its surface. When Ola touched the central motif - a spiral spreading outwards from tiny shining spearheads - a faint, bluish glow rose from the stones. The air thickened like mist. Light streaks flowed from each column, weaving through the air until something like a swirling, opening gate formed above their heads. Anka felt slightly dizzy, as if her body had become lighter, ethereal for a moment. Kacper stared wide-eyed at the swirling light, and Ola was already extending her hand towards the portal, as if an invisible force was drawing her inwards. Suddenly, the silence was broken by a soft, sonorous voice whose source they could not discern. "Whoever crosses the Granite Columns will enter a world from which there is no turning back without a corresponding price." The friends looked at each other. The portal lit up even more intensely, spinning faster and faster. There was electricity in the air and the promise of an adventure that could change their lives. Ola took the first step towards the light, while Anka and Kacper stopped at the border of the circular shadow. Should they follow her or retreat while they still could? At the same moment, a slender silhouette emerged from the portal, casting a long shadow over their feet. For a moment, no one moved, and the light of the portal pulsed to the beat of their hearts....
