Parallel Street Café
The evening was warm, but on Parallel Street the air already smelled of the first leaves. Maks walked a little faster than usual - his thoughts were racing, the day was tiring and there was only one desire in his head: strong coffee. Among the closed shops, one shop window lit up: a sign proclaimed "Cafe Przystań - open whenever you need it".
He didn't remember seeing the place before. But the door swung open with a distinctive ringing sound and drew him inside. The interior smelled of coffee and chocolate, and the walls were hung with unremarkable images: one frame held a spinning spiral, another something that resembled a map of the stars. At the counter stood Oksana. She had hair the colour of night and a smile that could be seen as overconfident. In her hands she was turning a porcelain cup.
- Plain black or something special? - She asked, looking Maks straight in the eye. - Because here, coffee can sometimes change the day.
He ordered a cappuccino, a little abashed by this remark. He took a seat by the window and realised that on each table lay a small object - a watch, a compass, a small box made of light wood. At his table lay a key.
He looked at the key, then at the coffee that appeared in front of him, steaming and smelling beautiful. Oksana sat across from him, as if she were no longer a barista, but someone else entirely.
- Did you know that this place has its own rules? - she began, tapping her fingernail on the tabletop. - Everyone who sits at my tables sooner or later discovers that everyday life here can be... surprising.
Outside the window, the world was slowly fading into the grey of the evening. Music played quietly in the café and the key on Max's table seemed to tremble, as if waiting for his decision. In the depths of the room, a door opened leading to a room whose existence no one had mentioned before. No one else took any notice - except Oksana, who suddenly fell silent and gave him a sign not to move.
Light streamed from the dark passage, as if there was another reality behind the glazed door. The key moved once more, this time clearly shifting towards Max. The boy felt a shiver run down the back of his neck. In a hushed voice, Oksana said:
- If you want to know what this key fits into, you have to hurry. But not everyone is ready to see how extraordinary an ordinary day can be....
Maks looked at the key, then at the still ajar door, and felt the rhythm of his heart quicken. Before him stretched a world he had never even dreamed of....
