On the Boundary of Duality
Lena once again stepped through the rusty threshold of an old villa on the outskirts of town. She had the feeling that the building attracted her like a magnet - seemingly abandoned, yet always with something going on inside. This time, she was accompanied by Kamil, a boy with restless eyes and an eternal thirst for new adventures.
- Do we really have to go in there? - He asked, looking nervously around the dusty lobby.
Lena only nodded. Something was calling her here, something she couldn't yet name. They tore through a pile of overturned furniture, heading deep into the house where the study must once have been. Light leaked through the dirty windows, casting unreal shadows on the dilapidated walls.
- 'Look,' whispered Kamil, pointing to one of the boards on the floor. It was unnaturally clean, and dust was arranged in swirling patterns around it. They pushed the board open. Underneath it was hidden a small metal flap. With a beating heart, Lena carefully lifted it open.
A pale light emerged from inside, completely different from the light coming through the windows. Nor was it a torch or any human device. The light was icy, slightly pulsating. They decided to go down the creaking stairs. At the end of the stairs was an old, dusty cupboard. When Lena opened the door, she saw not clothes, but something completely inexplicable - a shiny sheet of air, rippling like the surface of a lake during a storm.
- I think it's some kind of ... portal - whispered Kamil, not hiding his fascination.
Lena felt a mixture of fear and excitement inside her. She looked at Kamil, who gave her a slight sign with his head - shall we try it? Without answering, she reached out her hand towards the rippling surface. The moment her fingers touched the portal, the world around her swirled. A noise of unidentified sounds filled her senses, and the air thickened to an almost tangible substance.
They found themselves on the edge of a vast, unknown city. Underfoot they had glassy slabs winding serpentines, unnatural, misty shapes gliding across the sky. A giant shadow loomed over the city.
Then a quiet whisper came from inside the portal: - Be careful, not everything here is what it seems....
Lena and Kamil stood motionless, feeling the portal behind them slowly begin to close....
