Night train to Arcadia
Outside the windows of the train's carriage, night was imperceptibly consuming the last remnants of the purple dusk. They sat facing each other: Lena with a cup of coffee, Nikolai with his dishevelled head resting against the glass, Iga lighting up a book with her phone and Bartek, who kept saying this was the stupidest idea of their lives.
The plan was simple: first weekend off, anywhere, together. An all-night train to Arcadia - a city rumoured while they were still at university. It was said that it never appears on maps, tickets appear out of nowhere and passengers don't always return the same.
At first the train was empty and quiet, with only their laughter echoing through the compartments. But after midnight, the lights went out and the door to their carriage creaked open, giving way to an old woman with a dog, who looked at them and whispered: - Do you know which way the road to Arcadia leads? - Whereupon she walked on, and the dog left pawprints covered in silver dust on the floor.
Iga's phone suddenly stopped working. Strange flashing lights appeared outside the window and it was as if the outlines of the ruins, which were not on any map, flashed by. Bartek tried to reassure everyone with a joke, but no one laughed. Suddenly the train came to an abrupt stop and an announcement sounded through the loudspeaker: - Passengers to Arcadia, please prepare your tickets. The doors will only open once.
Lena looked at the others. Nikolai squeezed her hand nervously. Ahead of them, an unfamiliar station stretched in the darkness, and a quiet, inhuman whisper came from behind the door....
