Night Tracks at the White Hills Nature Reserve
The White Hills Nature Reserve lay on the edge of a small town. It was surrounded by an old forest, where silence grew thick at night and the day was filled with birdsong and barking foxes. For Kuba, Maja and Philip, since childhood, it had been a place for excursions, climbs and their first serious conversations on benches among the birches. Now that they were seventeen, they would return here, seeking a respite from the daily hum.
For some time now, however, the reserve has changed its face. Local nature lovers noticed that more and more animals were disappearing without a trace. The staff at the reserve were spreading their arms: the cameras were not recording anything, and the tracks were ending abruptly, as if the animals had vanished into thin air. Rumours grew stronger - some spoke of poachers, others of wolves, but the latter had not been seen here for decades.
Cuba was constantly reading reports and news, looking for patterns. Maja kept her hand on social media - rumours and theories were boiling. Philip, fascinated by technology, built his own photo trap with night vision. Finally, returning from the city one evening, they came up with an idea: they would spend the night in the reserve. They wanted to see for themselves what happens among the trees when no one is looking.
They planned everything down to the smallest detail. They took sleeping bags, torches, snacks and warm sweatshirts. Filip packed a camera, Maja a journal to jot down observations, Kuba suggested a route based on a map. They were excited and a little nervous, because a night in the reserve had a completely different dimension than during the day.
Well before midnight, they spread out at the spot where the fox was last seen. The night was quiet; all that came from afar was the rustling of leaves and the quiet clatter of drops on the leaves. They pulled out their camera several times, recording the movements of the mouse and the passing hedgehog. Nothing out of the ordinary happened until one o'clock in the morning.
Then, suddenly, Philip noticed that the camera was recording something strange. For a few seconds, numerous small lights flickered in the depths of the forest, forming an irregular, moving line. Maja looked into the night vision and held her breath - there were several large silhouettes moving among the trees, their shape difficult to discern. Already reaching for his phone, Kuba heard the quiet snap of twigs right next to him.
Someone, or something, was moving towards them. For a moment they all held their breath, trying not to move an inch. The lights in the distance had disappeared, but the sound was getting clearer. Suddenly, a pair of glowing eyes emerged from the darkness and stopped right in front of them, flashing in the torchlight. They stared at them, unsure whether it was an animal looking at them or something neither of them had ever seen before....
