Night Meeting in the Ruby Forest

Night Meeting in the Ruby Forest
A dark veil of night fell over Ruby Forest, illuminated only by the pale rays of the full moon. The air was filled with the scent of pine trees and the dampness after the recent rain. In this setting, four friends - Lena, Peter, Bartek and Alicia - decided to push their own boundaries. They were lying on a carrimat spread out under an old hazel tree, trying to track down the owl they had heard moments before. Their phones, muted and tucked deep in their rucksacks, were as undistracted as a lantern light. This was their first night of camping without adults, something they had long persuaded their parents to do. In the end, they managed to get permission on the condition that they stay near the Copper Trail. As Lena unrolled her sleeping bag, something crunched in the bushes just behind her. She turned around abruptly. Bartek, as usual the first to act, raised his head and raised his hand, ordering silence. For a moment, only their quiet breathing and the breaking of twigs could be heard. - 'It's not a deer,' whispered Alice, squinting her eyes. - Too little weight, a different rhythm to the steps. - Maybe a fox? - suggested Peter, but he himself sounded as if he wasn't convinced. Then Lena noticed a bright, glowing footprint on the damp mulch. The trace of a paw, strangely wide and ending in four elongated claws. She silently pointed it out to the others. - 'This doesn't belong to any animal that lives here,' said Bartek, pulling out his mobile phone and switching on his torch. As the beam of light slid across the ground, they saw a string of similar tracks stretching towards the thicket. Between these tracks lay something else - a few silver hairs, glinting in the light. - Let's follow it... - whispered Lena, fascinated. - Just be quiet! Carefully, step by step, the friends went deeper and deeper into the forest thicket. The silence was only broken by the crackle of twigs under their feet and the whisper of leaves above their heads. When, after a few minutes, they reached a small clearing, something moved in the shadows under a spreading oak tree. They stopped as if enchanted, unable to take their eyes off a pair of huge amber eyes that suddenly appeared just above ground level. In the darkness emerged the silhouette of a creature they could not identify. It was huge, slender, covered in glistening fur, and silently approached them The friends held their breath, unsure whether to take a step forward or retreat to the familiar, safe world. There was a quiet sound from deep in the forest, as if someone was calling them - and then the creature stopped, raising its head high into the air.
