Martina, Bartek and Lena had their own place – an old, forgotten park with a crooked bridge over a neglected pond. Adults avoided the place, and children in the area believed that something terrible lurked there after dark. For them, however, it was the perfect retreat, especially since they had started to observe a flock of wild ducks that had appeared unexpectedly that spring. One afternoon, as the sun was lazily hiding behind the clouds, the friends spread out on the bridge with binoculars and notebooks. Lena suddenly noticed something disconcerting: a strange animal appeared among the ducks – completely unlike anything they had seen in their atlases. It looked like a cross between an otter and a fox, with glowing eyes and a tail ending in a fluffy white tuft. ‘Can you see it?’ she whispered, pointing her finger. ‘I think it’s just looking at us,’ replied Bartek, squinting his eyes. The animal slowly dipped under the water and suddenly disappeared. Martina, the most daring of the group, decided to get off the bridge and look for tracks on the shore. Instead, she found something else: under the bridge, in the mud, lay a silver bracelet engraved with the motif of this mysterious creature. Before they had time to think about it, a loud splash came from the thickets on the other side of the pond. The animals froze, and a figure emerged from behind the thickets…
