Moon Lake and Cold Lady
Deep in the boreal forest, where the oaks hum about things of old and the ferns softly hide the footsteps of strolling ghosts, lies Moon Lake. The inhabitants of the nearby village, Kamiennik, had known this place for generations, but for years no one dared venture there after dusk. It was said that the lake smiles on those who cannot forget their desires.
On Friday evening, with a milky mist drifting from the sky, three adult friends-Jacob, Marta and Szymon-decided to break this unwritten law. Each of them dreamt of lifting the veil of everyday life and feeling that life still carried a hint of the extraordinary. Equipped with a thermos of hot coffee, lanterns and Jacob's old notebook, they set off along a path through the forest, shimmering in the moonlight like a stream of milk.
Jakub, a researcher of ancient legends, whispered fragments of old Slavic incantations under his breath, as if he wanted to soothe the sleeping powers in the darkness. Marta, a psychologist by profession, was trying to work out why there are so many fears and longings in people that take on faceless shapes at night. Simon, a geography teacher, enthusiastically talked about the strange properties of the lake: that the water never completely freezes over in winter and that the sand on the shore trembles when the wind blows.
- 'This is here,' Simon said, pointing to a wide stone in whose crack white feathers always lay, although no one had ever seen a bird here.
When they reached the shore of the lake, the mist suddenly thickened and the moonlight trembled. Martha raised her head and saw a female figure hovering in the middle of the dark mirror of water. Her hair flowed in a silver cascade and her gaze was the colour of ice. No one dared to shout. There was a swish of wind in the silence, and all three felt as if someone was watching them from behind a curtain of mist.
James, leaning against a stone, began to read a line from his notebook: "He who tears waters over the night will find, but will he survive?" An icy wave ran across the lake, shattering the silence with a crash. The woman on the lake raised her hand, and luminous silhouettes began to emerge from the bottom of the lake....
And then everything around them froze. The friends looked at each other, not knowing whether to take a step forward or run away. And the Moon Lake was waiting, ready to reveal something none of them expected.
