Misty Pass - Whisper of the Forest
A cool wind swished among the tall, twisted trees of the pass. Lena inhaled deeply at the smell of moss and wet leaves, trying to calm her nerves. It was the first time she had been here in years, and she knew perfectly well that her mother would never forgive her for this trip-but her brother had been gone for three days. And the last trail led right here, to the Misty Passes, a place from tales full of horror that the children of the village avoided at all costs.
Supported by an old torch, Lena trudged through the thickening fog. Every step seemed to muffle the sounds, and the world looked less and less like reality. As she passed a fallen stone arch, she felt as if she had entered a world from another dream. The trees had quiet voices and there was a sweet smell in the damp air that attracted and repelled at the same time.
Suddenly, she heard rustling. A figure emerged from behind a mossy trunk - not human, but not exactly animal either. There was something of the deer in it - slender horns, shiny fur, but the eyes sparkled with a strange, penetrating light. The creature stopped and watched Lena, as if reading her every intention. The girl took a step back, wanting to escape, but the roots beneath her feet seemed to bind her feet themselves.
- 'You came at the wrong time,' whispered the being in her thoughts. - But perhaps you are the one we have been waiting for.
A blue light flashed in the distance. Lena turned abruptly. In the clearing, amidst a circle of ancient stones, some kind of ritual was beginning. The air vibrated with whispers and lights, and Lena felt that she was in a place where the boundaries of worlds no longer mattered.
At the edge of the clearing, she spotted a figure bearing a twin resemblance to her brother - but was it really him?
