On a summer evening, when the sky over the Masurian lakes turns the colour of old silver, Lena, David and Kamil were walking along the dirt road leading to the old cottage they had rented for their holiday. The village was small, almost forgotten by time, and the inhabitants sparse and silent. The lake, called Ancient by all, lay amidst mists that would not disappear from its surface even on hot days. It was claimed that these mists were older than all human stories. During the first night, something woke Lena up. Through the window, she saw a barely visible figure emerge from the mist over the lake - tall, in a long white robe. She told the boys about it in the morning, but David only smiled indulgently and Kamil thought it was the result of tiredness. However, when all three of them walked down the forest path that same day, they came upon a stone circle hidden among the ferns. In its centre lay a handful of old coins sprinkled with fresh ash. In the evening, driven by curiosity and a hint of anxiety, they went out again. As they dashed through the forest, they heard a quiet singing - not in any language they knew, yet it seemed familiar. They were approaching the lake, and the mist was thickening by the minute. At one point, Lena felt an icy shiver. They stopped when suddenly the same figure Lena had seen in the night emerged from among the trees. The figure raised its hand towards them and the wind moved the water on the lake, showing for a moment the sunken ruins. Lena's name came up in a chant. They stood still as the ground beneath their feet began to tremble slightly, and mysterious lights appeared around them, like glowing eyes....
