Lunelia's Book of Transformations

Lunelia's Book of Transformations
The town of Lunelia looked like a dream at sunset, with roofs silvery from the moonlight and streets that tangled endlessly like threads of a spider web. Lena, Krystian and David often met by the abandoned building of the old library, where plants grew like green waves and the walls were covered with bas-reliefs of bizarre birds and scaly-skinned figures. One June evening, Lena brought in a strange map she had found among her great-grandmother's books. It was a thin sheet of parchment, covered in a language they couldn't read, but the library was clearly marked on it. Krystian, always thirsty for adventure, couldn't resist the temptation to investigate what was hidden inside the building. As the sun went down, they sat on the floor among the overturned bookcases and old volumes. David, the most reluctant, watched with his soul on his shoulder as Lena applied the map to one of the bas-reliefs. At that moment, the stone wall trembled barely perceptibly and the old bookcase moved away with a deafening creak, revealing a winding spiral staircase leading underground. Without a word, sensing that something unusual was about to happen, they started down. The air smelled of damp and dust, and a quiet humming sound came from the depths, as if someone was whispering to the stones. At the end of the stairs, a huge circular chamber appeared to them, filled with light emanating from the sparkling crystals floating in the air. In the middle of the room, on a stone pedestal, rested an ancient book. Lena approached first, but could hardly refrain from touching the cover covered in delicate, silvery writing. At the same moment, something moved in the shadows against the wall - a creature resembling a cross between a deer and an owl was watching them intently with amber eyes. Krystian held his breath. David whispered that they should go back, but Lena took a step forward, extending her hand towards the book. The crystals began to rotate faster and faster, illuminating the entire room. There was a low, melodious voice in the air, its words echoing simultaneously in everyone's head: "He who wishes to know destiny, let him answer the question..." At the same moment, the creature against the wall spread its wings, and the walls of the chamber began to ripple, as if the world they knew was slowly giving way to something entirely new.
