Little Viking bracelet
By the quiet fjord stood a Viking village. Little Einar wore a woollen cap and coat. He also had a rune bracelet from his mother. Grandfather Olaf taught him to tie ropes. He used to say: "Listen to the wind, it knows the way". Einar listened to the seagulls and the splashing of the waves.
That morning the sea was as smooth as glass. Ravens circled over the cliff and cawed at length. Einar found a small horn under a stone. There were strange runes on the horn too. The boy blew once, very carefully, quietly. An echo answered from the other side of the fjord. The grandfather looked at the bracelet and froze. The runes flashed gold, like little sparks.
The mist came in fast from the mouth of the river. Einar pulled the boat onto the sand by the water. Out of the mist came the shadow of a long ship. There were no rowers, only empty benches. In the bow sat a raven with a white feather. It looked at Einar and cawed twice. The bracelet grew warm like a pebble in the sun. The horn sounded on its own, though no one was holding it. "Einar, this is an important sign," - whispered the grandfather. 'Let's get on board before the fog disappears. The boy set foot on the cold wood. The ship moved on its own and turned towards the sea. Then a laugh rang out from the depths of the fog. It did not sound threatening, but very, very old. Something emerged just off the side.
