Lili shoelaces
Lila was tying her shoes by the door in the hallway. It was a quiet, toasty-smelling morning in the house. Mum was stirring oatmeal in the kitchen. Felek the cat was purring under the kitchen table. Suddenly, Lili's shoelaces twitched slightly. They made a knot without her fingers. Lila looked down at her shoes and laughed. "Hey, they're just shoes," - she said with a smile. The laces trembled again, harder and longer. Then she heard a whisper, as if from a paper bag.
Lila had lost her red crayon yesterday. The laces jerked slightly and moved. They went through the carpet like two snakes. They stopped by the radiator under the window. Red doesn't belong here, muttered Felek. Lila crouched down and looked under the radiator. There was only dust and a paperclip. The laces tightened and twisted again. They pulled her towards her bed. It was dark and quiet under the bed. The ticking of the clock could be heard. I'm not scared, whispered Lila.
The laces slid under the bedclothes and snapped. The mattress vibrated, as if something in there sighed. A thin line of light appeared on the board. The line grew and became a narrow crevice. From inside it was warm and crayons smelled. You can hear it, Felek, someone is calling us, said Lila. The cat set its ears and lifted its tail. The laces flashed and pointed to the crack. Lila took a breath and slid her hand into the light.
