Lila and the secret of the big tent
Today the circus came to our town. Lila is six years old and has big eyes. She clutches a red ticket in her sweaty palm. Under the big tent smells of popcorn and sawdust. A drum rumbles slowly like a big heart. Lights flicker and dance across the line. Colourful clowns practise smiles at the mirror. Mr Otto, the leader, bows low.
- 'Hello, Lilo,' says Mr Otto quietly. - The silver whistle for the finale has been lost. Without the whistle, the lights don't know when to flash. Lila looks behind the curtain and under the benches. That's when she hears a quiet clang in the big drum. - I think I've got it,' she whispers to Tosia, the acrobat. She crawls under the stage, careful as a kitten. Splinters tickle her knees, but Lila laughs. In the middle of the arena, Mr Otto lifts his cane. The whole audience quiets down and the drum picks up the rhythm. Lila extends her hand deep into the drum. Just above her, a harsh spotlight lights up. The drum rumbles louder and the whistle hooks something. - Lila, it's time! - a loud whisper sounds. Lila takes a deep breath and clenches her fingers....
