Lighthouse on Raspberry Street

Lighthouse on Raspberry Street
On Raspberry Street, not far from the old park, there was a lamppost whose light seemed different from all the others - dim, as if puffed up, and sometimes even pulsating with a silvery glow. Matilda saw it every day, looking out of the window of her upstairs room. She was used to the sounds of the city: the evening bustle, the hum of motorbikes and the laughter of passers-by, but on this night something pricked her with anxiety. As the clock struck one o'clock in the morning, the street became quiet. She heard the creak of a wicket. She stopped her finger on the screen of her phone and stuck her gaze into the darkness outside the window. Standing in front of the lamp post was a boy in a stretched jacket - Kacper from the third floor. Kacper was known for his strange ideas and never came home before midnight. Now, however, he stood motionless, looking up. Matilda decided to check what was going on. She quietly descended the stairs, put on her trainers and slipped out the door, trying not to wake her parents. Outside, the air smelled of rain and lilac, and the lantern shone as if more strongly than usual. - Kacper! - She whispered, stopping a few steps away from him. The boy did not even flinch. He was staring into the glass shade of the lamp, as if he were searching in it for the answer to some very important question. Matilda walked closer and then noticed that something was moving in the light of the lantern. They were not hollyhock worms. Golden spheres swirling like miniature planets, they seemed to move closer and further apart again and again, forming luminous constellations. When she looked up, she felt warmth on her cheek and a slight dizziness. - Do you see the same things as me? - she asked quietly. - 'People say that the old lamps on Raspberry Street sometimes play tricks, but it doesn't look... ordinary, does it? - he replied in an equally whispery voice. - 'I've noticed that these globules only appear when there's no one walking on the street but us. They sat down on the kerb and were silent for a while. Matilda thought it was a bit like finding her own personal galaxy in the middle of the pavement. Each ball of light changed colour from time to time: from blue to emerald and then to orange. The longer they looked, the more clearly they could see something like fine threads between them, as if someone was weaving a web in the air. Suddenly the light of the lantern shimmered more strongly. The threads began to spin faster, weaving themselves into ever new shapes. At one point, everything went quiet - there was not even the rustling of leaves anymore. A dark silhouette began to approach Raspberry Street. Kacper and Matilda stopped breathing, watching as the figure stopped at the edge of the light. The lantern blinked. A beam broke away from the ball of light and slowly, like a thread following a needle, glided towards the stranger. Matilda felt a cramp in her stomach. She knew something unusual was about to happen - but she had no idea whether they dared to come closer or whether they should run away. At that very moment, the lantern flashed with a blinding light, and all the colours of the world swirled around them, as if someone was transporting them to a completely different place....
