Did You Know?

Light from behind the door

Light from behind the door
Simon sighed as he looked at the dark outline of the building that had been haunting the main street of their town for years. It was Saturday, and he, Lena, Igor and Marta – all thirteen years old – were standing by the rusty gate of the old high school. Ever since classes had ceased there, legends had grown up around the school. ‘Come on, shall we go in?’ Lena adjusted the torch in her hand and looked defiantly at the boys. Igor smiled nervously. ‘Remember, Piotrek said you can see the light on the second floor at night…’ ‘Someone’s probably joking,’ burbled Marta, though her voice trembled slightly. They found a hole in the fence and, after a while, they were already inside. The old window panes rang quietly as the wind hit the windows. Inside, it smelt of dust and damp. Simon illuminated the corridor with his torch. It went out. There was complete darkness for a second before Lena switched on her lamp. ‘It’s… just the wires,’ muttered Igor, trying to sound confident. They crossed the corridor, passing the cracked tiles, until they reached the stairs leading upstairs. This was where it was rumoured that someone had seen moving silhouettes at night. Lena took the first step. The others followed her, trying not to pay attention to the terrifying echo of their own footsteps. Silence reigned on the second floor. Only a narrow sheaf of silver moonlight came through the dirty window. Suddenly, somewhere in the depths of the corridor, a sharp, cold light flashed. Everyone stopped, holding their breath. ‘Did you see that?’ whispered Marta. No one answered. A quiet crackle sounded. Light moved across the ceiling, as if someone was walking unhurriedly with a torch… or something else. Someone or something was on the other side of the closed door of the old biology classroom. A moment of suspense, tension, Lena’s wheezing breath. The door began to open slowly, and from behind it came an even brighter, unnaturally white glow…
