Lift to Yesterday
The dragging corridors of the City Museum were well known to Nina - at least she thought so. That evening, after closing time, as she escorted the last eccentric professor to the exit, she realised she had lost her favourite scarf. Searching for it, she came upon an unfamiliar door hidden behind a standing carelessly framed map from the 19th century. Inside was an old metal lift shaft, with a door decorated with ornaments and a strange clock symbol.
Nina felt a shudder - was something being renovated here? Instead of reason, curiosity prevailed. She squeezed inside. The panel was quite different from those in modern lifts: instead of buttons with floor numbers, there were brass dials and worn dials with dates on them. One indicated 1886, right next to it 2024. With hesitation, she turned one of the dials.
The lift trembled and the light inside went out. She heard a soft voice that resembled a wheezing whisper: "You chose a time you shouldn't be here." The door slid open with a rasp - not into a familiar corridor, but into a world plunged into twilight. Long shadows moved across the walls, and the ominous sound of footsteps echoed at the end of the corridor. Nina could smell old paper and the smoke of paraffin lamps.
Her heart pounded with excitement. She already knew that she had crossed the boundary not only of the museum, but also of time. Suddenly, a figure dressed in a cylinder and cape emerged from around the corner, carrying a mysterious suitcase. The figure looked at Nina with piercing eyes and slowly moved towards her. Nina tightened her fingers on the lift's brass handle, hesitating between escaping and learning the truth. What would happen next?
