Library of Reflected Words
In the middle of the city, in a tenement between an exotic tea shop and an inconspicuous photocopier, was the Franz Jloj Library. Szymon, a first-year student of philosophy, came here by chance - in search of a quiet place to study, where no one asked about the closing time and time was slightly lost amidst the smell of old volumes.
The first thing that struck him was the unusual light. The interior of the library was drowning in a warm glow, as if the sun came through the windows even at night. The high shelves, arranged in a maze, hid not only books, but also reflections. Simon had the impression that scenes not of this reality were reflected in the polished spines of the bindings - he could only see it out of the corner of his eye, something like a flash of an unfamiliar street or a strange face that disappears as soon as you try to look.
The sounds in the library were different too. The doors creaked as if they told old stories. The quiet rustling of pages was occasionally interrupted by the echo of laughter or sighs, although Simon was sure that he was alone in the room. Intrigued, he began to look into nooks and crannies that even the building plan available on the ground floor did not provide for. One evening, as the last ray of sunlight went out of the window, Simon noticed a shelf in the corner of the ground floor that he had never seen before. There stood a huge volume in a faded navy blue cover with no title. Opening it, he read the first sentence and he heard it. Literally - someone, or something, whispered it directly into his ear.
He felt goosebumps. At that moment, something trembled behind his back - a shadow moved across the wall, and the letters on the page began to move, arranging themselves into new words he didn't know, but which seemed to speak to him. Suddenly the light went out, and Simon felt that he was no longer alone. Standing in complete darkness and hearing a growing whisper, he stretched his hand towards the book, sensing that something was about to happen that would change his view of the world forever....
