Letters from under the stone

Letters from under the stone
Oskar didn't like mornings. Especially those Monday mornings, when the rainy clouds stuck to the windows and his mother at the table kept telling him to eat his cereal faster because the bus wouldn't wait. But even on those grey days, Oskar had his own ritual: before entering the schoolyard, he would avoid the old benches and walk straight to the little stone that lay right next to the green mesh fence. It looked perfectly ordinary, but to Oskar it was something of a school beacon - always exactly where he left it, never inconspicuous to others. Recently, however, something had changed. Last Thursday, Oskar noticed that the stone had crooked slightly, as if someone had moved it. And underneath it, he found a small, cream-coloured envelope with his name scratched on top. He opened it, and inside he saw a few words written in neat, slightly old-fashioned handwriting: "Check back tomorrow at the same time. I'll be waiting." From then on, all Oskar could think about was that letter. Who had left it? Maybe it was someone from school, maybe an older sister playing a joke on him? He wondered whether to tell someone about the letter, but felt he should keep it to himself. On Monday morning, the rain sloshed under his soles as he approached his stone. He looked around - the pitch was completely empty. He knelt down, picked up his stone and... found the envelope again. This time inside was a leaf with an address and a simple drawing: a twisted spiral and the inscription: "Start looking where light meets shadow." Oskar felt something stirring inside him - a feeling similar to the one you get moments before an important game or when you try something for the first time that you've never done before. He knew where the place in the drawing was: the park at the end of the street, where the orange light of the streetlights spilled over the old benches and winding pavements. When he arrived at the park after school that day, his hand was wet from holding the envelope. His heart thudded loudly as he walked down an alley full of fallen leaves. Suddenly, behind the oldest bench, he saw a shadow that seemed to move in a strangely familiar way.... Oskar held his breath and walked closer, ready for whatever he might find there.
