Did You Know?

Last Flight of the Phoenix

Last Flight of the Phoenix
Dry twigs crunched under Lena's feet as she and Kuba trudged through the dense forest on the outskirts of the city. The whole area was shrouded in a greyish mist, and the autumn sun shone through the treetops, casting golden patches on the ground. Every now and then Lena glanced uncertainly over her shoulder - she had the strange feeling that someone was watching them. They were looking for Kuba's missing dog, but in fact curiosity was leading them deeper and deeper into the forest, which the older inhabitants always spoke of with reluctance. - 'They're just old legends,' Kuba repeated, but his voice betrayed anxiety. When they reached a small clearing, they stopped. Among the mosses and tangles of roots was something neither of them had ever seen: a stone circle with a light blue mist floating in the centre. Lena felt the skin on the back of her neck suffer. - See... - she whispered, pointing to an emblem carved into one of the stones. It was a symbol resembling the wing of a Phoenix. Before they had time to discuss what to do next, the mist began to thicken, swirling faster and faster. Suddenly, Lena felt something pull her towards the centre of the circle. She grabbed Cuba's hand, but they didn't have time to step back. The world around them hovered in a stunning blue, and then.... They landed on a bed of soft moss, in a completely alien forest. The trees here were much taller and had silvery leaves that shimmered, though there was no wind. The singing of unfamiliar birds could be heard in the distance, and the air smelled of something strangely familiar. - Is this... another world? - whispered Kuba, clutching a backpack with a torch and an old compass. Suddenly, a tall figure emerged from behind a nearby tree - it was a girl with amber eyes and hair braided into a long plait, with a small sword hanging at her waist. She smiled somewhat mysteriously. - We have been waiting for you,' she said quietly. - You are the only ones who can save him. - Save who? - Lena asked, feeling her heart beating faster and faster. The girl looked up at the sky, where the shadow of a huge bird with flaming wings had just appeared. - The phoenix is in danger. You must make a decision before it is too late. Before Lena and Kuba had time to ask another question, the forest lit up with a red glow and a loud scream rang through the air. Something huge, which they could not yet recognise, burst through the treetops - and then everything swirled around them....
