Last Bell in the Old Wing

Last Bell in the Old Wing
The Old Wing of Lukasz Nowowiejski High School was a place where no one looked in without a clear reason. The wind always whistled louder here, the doors creaked with even the lightest movement of air, and the walls seemed to listen to everything that was said. When Mrs Kozłowska announced that the participants would have to spend the night in the Old Wing for the school's literary competition, no one was thrilled - except for seven friends from Class 2c. Maks, Karolina, Ola, Dawid, Radek, Melisa and Igor had known each other since primary school. Each of them had different reasons for agreeing to this special night. Maks was drawn to adrenaline and stories of strange sounds. Karolina, a history lover, dreamed of discovering something forgotten. Ola and Dawid hoped for great photographic material. Radek was planning a report on Instagram, Melissa just wanted to be with the group, and Igor... he just didn't say no to friends. They gathered outside the old auditorium just after nine o'clock, armed with torches, thermoses of tea and sleeping bags. You could feel the tension in the air, although no one admitted to being nervous. It was only when the bustle of the school corridors quietened and the lights in the main building began to go out one by one that they felt truly cut off from the rest of the world. It was just them and the stories perpetuated within the walls of over a hundred years ago. The first few hours passed with jokes and photographing the peeling frescoes. It wasn't until Melissa started telling rumours about a missing schoolgirl from a decade ago, and David clumsily tried to scare her, that something unexpected happened. A chilly blast swept through the corridor, extinguishing their LED lights. There was a deafening clatter in the darkness, immediately followed by the soft sound of a bell that hadn't been used for years. Everyone fell silent. Maks turned the torch, illuminating the keys hanging by the door to classroom 17 - a room that apparently no one had looked in since the fire years before. The bell sounded again, this time more clearly, as if someone was trying to get their attention. Karolina reached into her pocket for her phone, but the screen remained black. They looked at each other and then, almost simultaneously, pushed open the door to Class 17. There was silence for a moment, and then.... something flashed in the depths of the room. Before them, in the middle of the classroom, floated a tiny ball of light, pulsing with a soft, bluish glow.
